Every once in a while, a local event comes along that perfectly captures the spirit of small-town life in Western Massachusetts. For me, Granby's annual DinoFest is one of those traditions. It's quirky, it's joyful, it's family-oriented, and it's filled with the kind of energy that makes you smile just thinking about it.
This year marks the 11th DinoFest, and I wanted to do something a little different to celebrate. As someone who writes songs inspired by news stories, local happenings, and the Pioneer Valley community, it felt only natural to create an anthem for this festival - something that could stomp and roar right alongside Zippy the Dinosaur.
Why DinoFest?
Granby, MA may be a small town, but it has a big heart. DinoFest started as a fun, community-building event and has grown into a beloved tradition, drawing families, neighbors, and visitors together every fall. There's something magical about watching kids craft dinosaur masks, tasting homemade pie, and hearing live music echo through the crisp autumn air.
It's exactly the kind of festival that deserves a soundtrack.
Writing the Song
When I sat down to write Granby DinoFest, I wanted to make sure the song reflected the festival's personality: playful, upbeat, and inclusive. The lyrics highlight some of the signature moments - from dancing with Zippy the Dinosaur to sampling chocolate pie, tug-of-war games, and local bands bringing rhythm and joy to the day.
I imagined the chorus as a chant the whole town could sing together:
“Stomp, stomp, DinoFest is the place to be,
Where Granby's heart shines wild and free.”
It's a celebration of not just dinosaurs, but of community - the neighbors who organize the booths, the families who come year after year, and the spirit of togetherness that makes Western Mass such a special place to live.
My Hope for the Song
More than anything, I hope the song brings a smile to the faces of those who hear it. Maybe it'll become a little part of the tradition - something people can play on their way to the festival, or a tune that reminds them of happy afternoons spent on the town common.
Granby's DinoFest is about joy, creativity, and connection, and I wanted to write something that matches that energy.
